FAI Club of the Year 2010

On Friday 20th August Blessington FC were invited along with the other seven "FAI Club of the Month Winners" to make a presentation at the FAI AGM in Whites Hotel, Wexford. This was a fantastic honour for our Club & our presentation and story was well received by all (not to mention our bottled water which could be seen at numerous tables in the dining room, as well in some local pubs later in the evening).  However when the judging panel finalised their deliberations we were just pipped at the post by Kingcourt, Cavan to whom we offer our congratulations. Champions - U-16 / U-14 / U-11 & U-10

What a fantastic season for our under-age section - four of our teams were crowned champions of their respective leagues which as a Club we are very proud of all the lads & managers involved.

First to clinch their league title was Martin Gilligan's U-16 squad in Div 1, who won 12 + drew 2 of their 14 matches. Next up was our youngest winners this season, the U-10's Div 5 managed by Paul Farrell & Eoghan Barrett - again these lads went through their league season unbeaten & capped a wonderful season by clinching a double on Sat 29th May with victory by 2-0 against Belmont in the final of Major 2 League Cup. Our third team to win their league with an unbeaten record was Niall Fallon's U-14 Premier squad. Finally our U-11 Div 3 squad managed by Marie Callaghan & Linda Nolan clinched their league title after a play-off victory against Firhouse.

Also just a quick mention for our U-8's managed by Alan Sharrett & Gerry Heyden who were narrowly beaten in their cup final - hard luck lads but you have plenty of years ahead of you to win trophies for Blesso.

Finally a big well done to all our other squads who completeted the season - as they say the important thing is taking part & enjoying yourself - there's always another season to look forward to . . . .

FAI Club of the Month Award

On Thursday 11th February 2010, Blessington Football Club were awarded FAI Club of the Month at a presentation in City West Hotel. FAI President David Blood praised Blessington FC for their ongoing developments within the club and our dedication to providing the best facilities possible for our players and community. This is truly a fantastic achievement for all players, members and supporters of Blessington FC & indeed for our whole Community. It gives our club national recognition for all the hard work that is going into our club at grass roots and senior level. This latest award follows on from Blessington FC being voted South Dublin Football League Club of the Year for 2009. Blessington FC has now been selected to compete for FAI Club of the year. This award will be presented in Whites Hotel Wexford this August at the FAI annual general meeting. We hope to do Blessington proud again. Thanks again to all our committee members, team managers, players & supporters for their continued efforts in putting our Club and Town on the football map. Report on FAI website

Update on Crosschapel

Work has been ongoing over the last few months & we're delighted to confirm that all our 11 aside teams will now play at our new home in Crosschapel (small-sided teams will continue to play at The Community College as this provides easier access for the smaller kids & their parents). Our Club Room & 6 dressing rooms are now complete and ready for lots of use come September . . . . .

Welcome to the website of Blessington Association Football Club. This coming season (2010-11) promises to be a historic one for our club, as we finally move into at our new facilities at Crosschapel. After a long number of years work behind the scenes, finally we are beginning to see the fruits of our labour !! It is our intention to have all our 11 a-side teams playing here in Sept 2010. We will continue to play our small-sided games (up to Under 10) and our Sunday morning academy in The Community College, as this location suits better for kids of that younger age.

Since the end of May '09 when we took delivery of our large pre-fab building - school classes which we intend turning into 6 new changing rooms – work has been ongoing. On Friday 22nd May our electricity supply was turned on. We now have a freshly cleaned & painted club room where we recently held our successful AGM in June. In May we drilled down 510 feet to source our own water supply, which will be used to irrigate the new pitches and also for toilet and shower facilities. Rumours that this is the source for our bottled water are not true !!

These will be Dressing Rooms - I promise !!

Work commenced in early June '09 on the actual pitches – we will have 2 new properly drained full sized pitches, which will complement the current pitch. Phase 2 of our project will be the resurfacing of the third pitch as well as developing some other areas for training facilities. We all look forward to seeing all our teams playing on top quality pitches later this season.

As I’m sure you can appreciate a development of this scale is very costly. We have taken out a substantial loan from our local Credit Union and we will be appealing to all our members and the local community to support us in our various fund-raising events over the next couple of years. The quicker we pay this back the sooner we can move onto Phase 2. If anyone has any ideas for us in this regard, we would be delighted to hear from you – please just contact any of our committee members.

We are the only soccer club within an 8 mile radius of the town. Currently we have almost 400 members, making us the largest football club of any code in West Wicklow - I don't think the group of lads that started a soccer team back in 1968 could have foreseen such a growth over the last 40 years. Next season we expect to have have 19 juvenile teams, 2 senior teams & a ladies team representing our area in their various leagues from under-7 upwards. We also run a weekly academy for approximately 70 boys and girls in the 5 to 7 year-old age bracket (every Sunday morning at The Community College at 11am - please feel free to come along).

As you can appreciate it is very challenging (not to mention expensive) to keep a club of this size functioning correctly. We would like to thank all our sponsors, advertisers and especially all the parents who continue to help us keep our young people busy and active through sport, which is more relevant now in this era of increasing negative temptations. It also cannot be overstated the positive impact the involvement in team sports has on the overall development of young people.

If you feel you can help out in way, we would be delighted if you could contact any of the committee members.
